Sunday, January 30, 2011

Well, here we are at the beginning of Week 3 of our Made to Crave study.  I hope that so far you have put a lot more thought and action into your relationship with the Lord. I know I keep saying it, but please don’t lose sight of this one thing: The #1 purpose of this study is to satisfy your deepest desire with God. This study isn’t magical. It’s not a quick fix. It’s not about how much you exercise or lose weight. Just take a quick glance at the chapter titles of this book. Go ahead. Do it now. Don’t you see by the names of the chapters alone that this journey isn’t an easy one. Obedience and discipline take hard work and commitment. I don’t say this to discourage you. I say this to affirm that you will have hard days and even weeks maybe. But in the end you will gain. And this time it won’t be pounds, it will be freedom, victory, courage, and a greater closeness with God. Nothing tastes as good at all that!

My friend Danita shared a song by Mercy Me with me. Read these lyrics:

‘You were made for more than this…

You’re beautiful.

You are treasured.

You are loved.

You are His. ‘

Now listen to the song and watch this video. Prepare to be touched by God.

Visit the Made to Crave website to download and print the Fridge sign for week 3. This week’s word is:

PEACE

What a word. Seems I strive so hard for peace. Doesn’t that seem like a oxymoron? Striving for peace?  Why is it that it’s so hard for us to obtain peace? Here’s what I think. It’s there for us, but we refuse it. We choose chaos over peace. We choose not to trust God with the details of our lives and therefore peace does not reign in us. I can say this, because I’ve been guilty of it many times. Too many times. God doesn’t want us to be in turmoil, no matter what our circumstances.

Philippians 4:6-8 says,

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Look what peace does. It guards your heart and mind!!!  Hello? That’s what we need to survive, protection over our hearts and minds. So, ladies, let’s accept the peace we are offered through Christ Jesus,  okay?

  1. MELISSA!!!! I finally was able to get the book yesterday…and on sale!!!!! Maybe I can still join in and catch up…but don’t want to rush God either :) So, can always just go back and start on Week 1 today and just be a couple of weeks behind. :) Can you tell I’m excited!!!! :)

Have had a great couple of days with Renee and Leah. Three women prayed to receive Christ. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye to them today…but Renee is coming back in June and going “up north” to MBC!!!! YIPEE! :)

Maybe we can get you to Canada some day.
    Love ya,
    Joy

  2. Mary Beth says:

What a BEAUTIFUL video! It is as if they recorded it as a companion for this study. Praying for all my fellow sisters in this study that it’s message would sink deep into your inner-most beings.

Here is a definition of PEACE that is on the front of a journal I have:
it does not mean to be in a place where therre is no noise, trouble or hard work. it means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

Praise the Lord that through Christ this is available to us. Let’s choose it! Prayers for peace in your hearts lifting up for you all right now.

  3. Awesome video – feels like they made it for ME… thanks Mercy Me! Thanks, God for speaking to me through that video. I am beautiful!!

  4. Oh… KLOVE was talking about a “word for the year” – this is mine: PEACE!

  5. Mary Beth, Thank you for the definition of peace. I am writing it down in my journal. I can only believe that God gave me that very type of peace this week even if I didn’t realize it in the midst of a very sick child and the loss of a family member.

  6. I love that…we strive for peace. No wonder we don’t find it. Peace is not achieved from working at it; it comes from within…it already resides within you because of Jesus…but we do have to consciously access it within us and then express it through our mind, heart, words, and actions. THAT’S the tricky part! I can access my peace when I’m on my own; it’s just when the rest of my life enters that the trouble begins. Like Joyce Meyer says, “I am at peace with everyone around me all day long. And then the kids and my husband get home.” :)

This week, I am working to KEEP my peace all day long – in the face of the many work crises I come up against, in the face of frustration about some personal things, and in the face of the enemy’s every attempt to make me forget I ever knew peace in my heart.

  7. Selena M. says:

Thanks Melissa for your encouraging words today! One part of the Participant’s Guide I was working in this week questioned what I hoped to accomplish through this study. My answer was PEACE!!! Your words on peace today was just what I needed. I am beginning to realize what food is – just food – nourishment for our bodies – that’s it – nothing else. It’s not a nerve pill, not a companion, not a comfort, and definately not a replacement for God. I am beginning to see food in a whole different light. To paraphrase Lysa: “Our ultimate weight goal is not the number on the scale. Our ultimate weight goal is peace”!!!!

    Melissa,
I am still a few days behind the ‘published schedule’, and have just finished chapter 5 Made for More. I can’t tell you how liberating that chapter was for me. My family has been through a major upheaval. The process of reading the chapter, marking the verses in MY Bible and journaling through the questions made clear to me that the choices my family members make do not define who or who’s I am. I am thankful for this Bible study and look forward to more good things God has to show me.

    Thank you!
    Vickie

  9. Wow, Melissa, that video is too awesome. You are treasured, sacred, His. Beautiful. You’re meant for so much more than all of this. Mercy Me. How perfect a song is that for us!

Have a Blessed, Joy-filled “Sonshiny” week!

  10. I absolutely loved that song…I am amazed that at 3different places non-related the same message is coming clear…how great is thy faithfulness! My husband told me I was crazy when we drove an hour to church and there were 2 other families from our hometown, he said we were all crazy as we went to the p31 confirm together, but had no idea would all be at PCC…told my husband I am not crazy…I’m just determined and mediocre is not acceptable! I am a child of the king, chosen and loved and made for more! Thank you lord for three awesome messages during a painful tough week. I’m so thankful he hasn’t given up on me but continues to nudge and remind me! Great is th faithfulness! It’s time to make a change…I have verses and signs posted to keep my eyes on him, between the scriptures and praise I am determined! My body is God’s temple and he is my loving father.amen, amen!

  11. I rec’d my book after you began the study, but as of tonight, I am caught up! So I’ll look forward to sharing with everyone as we go through the rest of the book. I’m highlighting sentences that jump out at me like crazy. I especially like the contrast between trying to do this [or anything] on our own vs. doing it by the power of the Holy Spirit. [failure vs. success] I began my new eating plan last Sunday and have lost six pounds [mostly by giving up white carbs, smaller portions and the 16 oz. of water first thing in the morning]……….the easy water weight pounds, no doubt. But it’s an encouraging start, as is having the accountability of this group. Thanks for being there for us, Melissa………..a belated Happy Birthday. Mine was this week also. Hugs.

  12. What a wonderful group of ladies: so encouraging, so loving, so beautiful! God Bless!

  13. Thanks, Selena, for the great reminder of what food is – just food – nourishment for our bodies – that’s it – nothing else. It’s not a nerve pill, not a companion, not a comfort, and definitely not a replacement for God. I needed to hear that & wrote it down in my journal. God bless you!!

  14. I agree so much with the suggestion to go to the BIble when verses are referenced. Sure, you can read the verse in the book. It may even be the same translation as your Bible. But, for me, reading from my Bible makes it more GODs word. I know that it is the same words, but it feels more like I am listening to God instead of reading a book.
Blessings to each one of you this week. May your hearts and minds be at peace!

  15. Dawn – you are so welcome! I know that we’ll all get through this together! :-)

  16. Lovely song and video. Thanks for all the encouragement Melissa, you are such an angel only God could have touched that heart of yours. You want all of us to succeed and this shows the depth of your heart. I pray that God will continue to heap blessings and favor on you and protect you from the onslaught of the enemy as you carry out His will and purpose for your life.

  17. Great song! It is a love song to us from the Lord. :)

Okay, I am struggling with my food choices a bit. Life has been super hectic. I decided to give up sugar (sweets primarily) and it has been difficult the past two days. I really wanted to sink my teeth into some chocolate yesterday. This morning, after a really stressful start to the day, I went looking for food to help calm me down. I didn’t eat any sweets, but I did take a couple bites of pasta salad, until I stopped myself and said “you’re still using food to calm you down and this isn’t helping”! So I closed the container and said a prayer. It has helped but I am still feeling the need to eat something – anything considered comfort food. But I am relying on the Lord and His spirit in me working in me and giving me the desire and the power to do what pleases Him!!! Phil. 2:13.

Thanks for the video and blog. Peace! Yes, that is the ultimate goal. True peace! God bless.

  18. Carissa D. Huffman says:

I so need PEACE this week. I need to trust Him more and more.

My dad had his prostate removed last year to treat cancer. His cancer appears to have come back. He is trying to downplay this, but he is terrified. My husband and toddler are both on a second round of antibiotics for ear infections. Our bills are almost more than we can pay.

But, God is good. We will be getting a tax refund that will allow us to set up a backup fund for daycare–my mom has been helping us pay every month, and this is the last month she can help. We will have enough to pay back the big dental bill that insurance did not pay, and the credit account we set up with the oral surgeon. After that, a bit of $$ for my son’s birthday. We aren’t ahead, but we aren’t going to be crushed.

He has brought me this far. I have lost 3 lbs in 3 weeks, and I am feeling drawn to healthier choices. I am getting more activity in. I am feeling empowered, and determined. I can’t wait to feel the peace…

See you tonight, sweet sister–prayed for you today!

    Carissa in eastern Iowa

  19. Are you excited about tonight? I am excited for you. I love that song, I listen to the local Christian stations so I knew the tune when you printed the words. It is a great song and so perfect for all of us working for a healthier life! Please come back this week and tell us all about getting ready for your web show tonight. We love the back stage stuff too! Prayers for a successful show! Hugs too!

  20. You’re doing a wonderful job on the webcast!

So grateful to be a part of this online group!

  21. It was great seeing you on the webcast. You were terrific! Thanks for letting us Jesus girls be a part of your study group.

  22. Melissa – you did a wonderful job on the webcast tonight! Thank you so much for your insights and for your honesty. You are encouraging so many of us on our spiritual/physical journey.

I do have a question for you (maybe for your Friday Vlog). What do you do when you are invited to someone’s home for dinner or lunch? My in-laws are having us over for dinner this coming weekend and I don’t want my mother-in-law to change her menu for me. I want to be a gracious guest but I also don’t want to completely go against my eating plan. Thank you in advance, Melissa!

  23. Melissa what do you do if you just now received the book. Do i go back to the first week or do i start where you are at right now. I thank you for everything that you are doing for us. Thanks for the encouragement, you are awesome.

  24. I am just joining the Bible study. I so appreciated what you had to say last night. “Dare to believe that this time will be different.” I could completely relate to what you said about diets working well for you…for awhile. I am there, but as my willpower wears thin as it has many times before, I am afraid of this cycle. I so want things to be different – for God to be the object of my desire for Him to be the One that I run to. I am excited to be part of this journey. I had read through the chapter on an accountability and think this may be God’s provision for me as I don’t have a friend who is joining me on this journey. Just a simple question. I have never done an online study before. What is the best way to keep up with what is going on. I saw these posts here but you also said to check out Facebook. Really not sure where I should be checking in each day for support/encouragement.

  25. Hello. Thank you for your encouragement. Just what I needed. Enjoyed the webcast last night…the part I was able to watch. Praying for everyone today. Please remember me in prayers as I continue to try to get my exercising in. Ice storm here…☺

  26. I’m very thankful for your study Melissa and haven’t done an online Bible study before. The webcast was so helpful last night and I even got to watch it again today! I find it’s helpful to listen twice and take notes. This is truly a marathon and not a sprint. Every nugget of information we learn is valuable. The verses on Lysa’s shield of faith were great. I have a list of all of the great Bible verses that have spoken to me so far regarding my need to crave God. I am going to write each one on a note card and put them on a binder ring to carry with me. I should have plenty of time to do it since we are stuck inside because of the snow storm with a complete white out going on here. There is a foot of snow on the ground so far and it’s coming down faster and blowing more than I’ve ever seen in my lifetime of 40+ years. It’s even lightning and thundering out there. We can all be praying for each other to get our exercise done…even if it’s inside our homes for awhile!

  27. What a beautiful song and amazing video! Thanks for sharing!!
