SLL Week 11, Day 1

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
We do not know what we ought to pray for,

but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
~ Romans 8:26 (NIV)

Hello there!  Stephanie Raquel here, from Illinois — not Steph in Texas :) — and I am beyond thrilled to be teaching this week, as we jump into Chapter 11 of Stressed-Less Living by Tracie Miles.

Because I haven’t yet met most of you, I’ve prepared a brief intro video, which also gives you our Reflection Verse challenge for the week!  And by the way, hello to the amazing women from OBS Facebook Group 47!  =)

(If you can’t see the video, please click HERE to see it.)

I’m soooo very excited about this chapter.  You know why?  Because it’s chock-full of practical wisdom.  LOVE THAT!!  We’ll dive into more of the specifics of the book tomorrow.  Meanwhile, as you probably saw in the video, here is your assignment for today:

  1. Read all of Romans Chapter 8.  Ideally, twice, in two different versions.  If you don’t own two different bibles, BibleGateway.com is an awesome resource for you to add a parallel translation, even in another language!  (Two of my personal faves are the NIV and The Message.)  EXTRA CREDIT:  Begin exploring Romans 8:26 a little deeper, and verse map it over the next few days!
  2. Take a moment to share the reflection verse with a family member or a close friend.  This is a powerful verse, in the middle of a powerful chapter!  And it deserves to be shared because not only will it encourage someone else, it will also cement God’s word into your heart.  You might even encourage her to sign up for the next OBS with you!  Some optional ways to do this:
  • Handwrite the verse on your bathroom mirror.
  • Text it to a friend who’s facing difficulties.
  • Send an encouraging e-mail.
  • Make it visually creative, and post it to Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest or Instagram (@P31OBS).  Make sure to tag us if you can!
  • “Go old school” and write the verse in a card, or send it in a letter with a stamp on it!  Who doesn’t love getting actual personalized mail??

Finally, I would love to hear from you in the comments below!  Please note, every comment enters you into a drawing for a chance to win an autographed copy of What Happens When Women Say Yes to God by Lysa TerKeurst, our next P31 Online Bible Study.  We’ll announce the winner on Friday!

  1. What are your impressions as you read Romans 8?  What was your favorite verse or verses, and why?
  2. How did you share the reflection verse with a friend or loved one?   And, if you know it, what was the reaction?
  3. What do you think about the fact that the God of the Universe, who knows all and sees all, is capable of praying for YOU?  How does that impact your prayer life?

Bonus Assignment

Start reading Chapter 11, cuz it’s only 5 pages long.  We’ll be back in touch tomorrow!

Love & Hugs,
Steph Raquel

  1. Christine says:

I love this chapter in Romans! The verse that stuck out to me was verse 18: “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” I’ve also been doing a Kay Arthur study on Ephesians and we just did a word study on the word “worthy” this week! Just to think that our present sufferings don’t even carry the same weight as the glory to be revealed to us is so encouraging!! I shared the reflection verse with a small, Christian group of women I belong to online. Two of them are also doing this study! :)

  3. Jeanie Kelley says:

I just looked at Day 1 and thought long and hard who to give this to and I have a lady with an inoperatable–hope I spelled this correct–brain tumor and I thought she needed some encouragement so I will take this to her on Wednesday when I go and clean for her.

  4. I just finished Chapter 11. These chapters are running parallel with my life. My son is in jail, had a grand mal seizure and I have no way of knowing he is okay, my younger son is having gastronomic problems and we are at the Mayo Clinic in Mn for testing, I received word last evening that my husband was admitted to the hospital at home for diverticulitis. I am feeling overwhelmed. My heart knows I trust God has this, but it doesn’t help the pain I feel inside of me. I try not to worry, to trust God. He knows the plans he as for us, yet I am still feeling anxiety and worry. I pray he guides me, shows me, and teaches me to fully trust him. I found it interesting in the chapter that it spoke of how one problem can lead to others in a short period of time. This is me, my life. God grant me peace, healing for my family, and strength to endure all we have on our plate.

    • Becky, my love and heart go out to you. The vision that comes to my mind right now is what we saw in the music video by Chris Tomlin (not sure if the name is correct ) Jesus our Saviour and protector standing beside the surgeon to guide his hands during a procedure. I see that gift for you. Jesus in front of you, beside you and behind you. Guiding your every move, there for you to lean on, to hold you up and keep you from falling.

Dar God, please give your strength and guidance to Becky as she deals with these multiple emotional issues. Show her that she can lean on you. Show her that you are there. Becky, may you feel the presence of The Lord as you work through these issues in your life. May He relieve you of the stress and anxiety you are now enduring. In Jesus name I hold Becky up to you for your strength and guidance. Amen.

  5. Thanks for leading us this week, Steph (not from TX)! :) I love Romans chapter 8 and when I opened my Bible to go there yesterday, it was already all marked up! Good stuff there! I also shared on my fb page.

  6. On vacation and sharing on Facebook. One good use of technology!
Never really considered that GOD was praying for me. Thought of it as GOD simply knowing what I needed. Now I can think of this verse as an active one. GOD prays for me!

  7. I am in awe that the God of the Universe prays for me and intercedes for me. I think of all the things more important and more serious and am breathless at His devotion to me Thank You Lord and it helps me by humbling me and it maes me want to talk to God more

  8. The thing that stuck out to me as I read Romans 8 is that there are a lot of God’s truth and promises that I was unaware of and I am committing to dig deeper into God’s Word this summer. I don’t want to be one of those believers who only knows the well known verses in the Bible. I will soon be on summer break yay! So I will have more time to dig deeper and find those truths and promises I have been missing out on, I am so excited for this new adventure.

  9. This verse actually came to mind recently before I knew it was going to be this week’s reflection verse! What a relief to know that we don’t have to pray out of our own wisdom-but that God, through the Spirit steps in and helps us out. So many great verses in Chapter 8, thanks for the challenge in reading the whole chapter, b/c it is packed with great truths! I shared the verse on facebook by making this week’s pin my profile picture.

    • Stephanie Raquel says:

Beautiful! Agree … soo many truths in this little chapter of the Bible!!

  10. Katrina says:

Romans 8 is one of the most marked up chapters in my Bible and now even more so. So many good scriptures, but if I had to pick one it’d be verse 28 because it’s one that I’ve memorized and has encouraged me through so many tough times that I was struggling to understand. I shared our reflection verse, along with a little blurp about it on FB. There were likes, comments and shares. It’s such a powerful verse, to know that God is praying for us. How could we not pray?!

  11. I”m a day late, yikes! but i posted this is a facebook group for a guy who was seriously injured just over a week ago…he’s in a local hospital…..

  12. I loved reading Romans 8 and copied several verses to look at more closely – 18, 27-28, 31b, 38.

“If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” 8:31b…this is so powerful and something to keep in mind as we face day-to-day situations at home, at work, etc. If we are following God’s word and living the life he has called us to live then no one else’s criticisms or harsh words should matter.

  13. The verses about being under the spirit of the flesh or the spirit of God jumped out at me. I am having a hard time getting on track with working out and eating right now that summer started and I am off work from teaching. I do fine until a craving hits (the spirit of the flesh) and I can’t get it off my mind and I give in and eat it. Verse 12 in the NLT says “Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.” This reiterates for me that God will give me the strength to make good choices if I surrender this struggle to Him. Just because I crave something, I don’t have to eat it! I don’t have to listen to the cravings, but can be controlled by God who gives me the strength to make choices that are going to lead to health.

  14. I’ve been sick this week and I thought I had already posted but I guess not. I have read the NIV and the message. I love that website and have never used it before, but will be using it from now on.
