A Woman Reclaimed and Restored by her Savior

Today as I read my friend, Suzie Eller’s words in today’s Proverbs 31 Devotion, I could hardly believe they were about me.

Hi! Welcome to my blog…well I’m calling it a blog. As you can see, I haven’t blogged in a while. But oh, how I’ve missed writing on my own blog and so I’m so happy to be visiting with you today.

If you have popped over here from Encouragement For Today (the Proverbs 31 Daily Devotions), welcome! And if you are an old friend, who used to frequent my blog, welcome back!

I was a victim of sexual abuse. I use “was” because today I am no longer a victim, but a victor. That road hasn’t been easy, but because of our mighty, wonderful, caring, loving, and healing Lord, I can say that today.

In the devotion today, Suzie Eller talks about God’s forgiveness of sins. Read the key verse she references~

“He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.”  Titus 2:14  NLT

When I first read this verse, my thought was selfish. This verse is great for when I sin, and I accept God’s freedom in forgiveness, but what about for my abuser…that man who sinned and took me as his captive?  But then…read on.

Suzie writes~

We often give thanks for His sacrifice that removed the debt of our sin. But there is more. Jesus took our sins, but that same act freed us from the effect of others’ sins upon our hearts and lives. ~ Suzie Eller

Not only am I free from my own sins through the power of Jesus Christ, but I can also find freedom from the sins of others who affected me also.

HELLO!!!! Can I hear a praise God and hallelujah about that!!!

My favorite line from today’s devotion by Suzie is this one~

If you were to ask Melissa who she is, would say she doesn’t see herself as a woman marked by a thief, but a woman reclaimed and restored by her Savior. ~ Suzie Eller

And she’s right. It hasn’t been the easiest road, but I’m here to tell about it. There is an unmatched power through Jesus that we cannot find anywhere else. How about you?  I bet you’ve had trials in your life. Maybe some that even affect you still today. Are you marked by a thief who stole from you or are you reclaimed and restored by your Savior?

Today, why don’t we take a step forward towards healing. There is freedom on the other side and we are not meant to live as victims, not with Jesus in our lives we aren’t.

Our Turn For Action:

Pray today’s key verse today. Pray if for yourself and pray it for anyone who has sinned against you. (I know you might not feel like doing that, I get that completely, but just do it 😉  Then give thanks for the sacrifice Jesus made that removes the debt of our sin and frees us from the effect of other’s sins upon us.

I’m a woman reclaimed and restored by y Savior. How about you?

***Thank you Suzie Eller for sharing my story in your new book, The Mended Heart: God’s Healing for Your Broken Places.

  1. Hallelujah!! Praising God for His healing power…to heal not only physical hurts but emotional and spiritual as well.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19

He has done a new thing and is using it to bring all kinds of glory and honor and praise to His Kingdom, pointing women to the One and Only SAVIOR of the World, pointing them to the One and Only TRUTH in this world!!

I love you girl and celebrating with you today!!!

    • Thank you Wendy :) Love you too! and I’m so grateful to have you in my life, you have inspired and encouraged me since the day I met you!

    • Wendy& Melissa,

I know my post below is very needy and I at first, was not going to post since all the other posts are so upbeat and thankful! I have been trying to do the “so that” study….
I would appreciate, if you have the time, to guide me or speak as the Holy Spirit leads you. I am coming from a sincere, genuine place…knowing I have screwed my life up totally….for so long…,what do I do? I do believe in God..however have not lived it and my thoughts keep telling me I might be too far gone. I respectfully reach out to you.

  2. Jesus is so so good, isn’t he? He heals us from the deepest of wounds and forgives not only our sins but heals us from the sins of others upon us. Amen.

Your story is so much like mine Melissa. I too was a victim of childhood sexual abuse but I am no longer a victim, not just a survivor – but I am a VICTOR who thrives in a beautiful life that at one time in my life, I never imagined possible. But the redeeming power of our Lord works miracle upon miracle in our lives.

It is so good to see a post on your blog, the blog that started it all for so many of us.

    I love you sister.

  3. Praise our God that He loves us so – to make us Victors! Melissa, when I read your post, I automatically thought of this – and I love The Voice version – ” I will compensate you for the years
that the locusts have eaten—the swarming locusts,
The creeping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts—[a]
My great army that I unleashed against you.

26 In that day, you will eat plenty of food and always have enough,
so you will praise My name,
The Eternal One, your God who is merciful to you.
Never again will My people be shamed among the nations.” (Joel 2:25,26)

God has been merciful and is using you to reach NATIONS for Him! What an awesome thing!

Hallelujah for our God who heals, who restores, and who redeems!

  4. Thanking God for His power to heal and restore!! And as if that isn’t enough, He then takes our past pain and uses it for good and for His glory, if we are willing! Thank you, my friend, for allowing Him to use your story. How exciting to see you post here again! :) Love you! xoxo

  5. Melissa,

Thank you for sharing your amazing testimony! I love how you turned it around from being a vicTIM to a vicTOR. By His grace alone- praise God!!!

    Love you, sister!!! <3

  6. Thanks for sharing your testimony…very powerful!
I have been in an unhealthy marriage(30+years) where we have spent years arguing, some verbal abuse, and while I started as an innocent, I was hit in face recently w/reality that I have become critical and resentful also, we have difficulty talking beyond anything superficial….the worst is I never once sought help, just tried to try harder…now I realize if I had responded gently instead of reacting even one time, it might have made a difference. I am going to confess some lying to my husband…so afraid yet know I want to start walking in the light. Can’t give details here so much missing……I have been Christian all my life-will God still forgive me 30+ years of sin and doing wrong thing and wipe my slate clean or because of the habitual nature of my sin….am I cast away? Am I really a Christian? I so desire to be rid of this anxiety and know that I am His….

      Hi Brenda,
I am just a regular, run-of-the mill gal who “happened” to read this blog today. I don’t have a blog and am not a bible scholar by any stretch of the imagination. However, your questions and reaching out have stopped me in my tracks and I want to address your concerns by giving you some hope. You say that you believe in God and you are a Christian, Romans 10:9 says “if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 6:23 says, “for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of Godis eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” And Romans 8:37-39 tells us that we are more than conquerors, and nothing, not anything can separate us from the love of God….NOTHING!!! So, despite your current or past sins, if you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and he died for our sins, and if you confess that out loud and in your heart, girl, then your sins have been cast as far as the “east is from the west.” Jesus’ death in the cross paid it all!!! By God’s amazing gift of grace, all we have to do is believe it and we are free! Period! The end!!! PRAISE GOD!!!!! I find that Christian music brings God’s word alive to me, may I recommend that you download or purchase Mercy Me’s album that has just been released? It is called “Welcome to the New” and is all about God’s grace that we cannot earn, but it is a free gift. I fear that Satan has you believing lies that things you have done will remove you from God’s love. I would like to recommend that you listen to Casting Crown’s song “Voice of Truth” and also look up Mark Hall’s (lead singer) testimony about how Satan had him believing a whole mess of lies for a long time too. I want to wrap this up but let you know I will be praying for you. God knows your name, your struggles and He loves you more than you may even realize. The scripture that changed my life 9 yeArs ago bringing me out of a great place of depression and brought restoration is Jeremiah 29:11…..(and I NEVER knew this was in the bible) “For I know the plans I have for you, declares The Lord. Plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” May God’s word minister to your heart and heal you in all areas where you need it. I will be praying for you!!!! • Dear Suzanne,
Words cannot express how much your reaching out to me meant! I don’t think you “just happened” to read the blog today…it was an answer to prayer.
Satan has been filling my thoughts with accusations because of the long term and habitual nature of my sin, However……..you helped bring me back to who my hope must be in …Jesus…. And what He says…….that nothing can separate me from His love! I have confessed my sin to Him and know I will have to walk through the consequences(which overwhelmed me) ……all part of changing direction to walk free in the light. Thank you for reminding me of the Gospel message….I know I have to much to walk through, and that there will be struggles, especially with thoughts….and yet, I know I must trust His promises. Fear & anxiety is not from Him. Thank you for sharing about being brought out of place of depression….to restoration! I did listen to the Mercy Me’s new cd–it was like each song written for me-I have downloaded it and also the Casting Crown’s songs!
Suzanne-so grateful for your exhortation and prayer….and you are much more than a “regular” gal to me….. Appreciate your heart! In Christ, Brenda. (BDorn06@gmail.com)

Praise God and Hallelujah, Melissa! Love reading your blog posts. Am still looking for that “action” board from the M2C bible study ; )

  11. Thank you Melissa for having the courage to step out and share your victory! I am of that same survivor club too. Far too many of us are. It is almost some twisted “rite of passage” for so many that I know. Thanks be to God that we CAN reclaim what was taken!

I am very excited about what Suzie wrote:
We often give thanks for His sacrifice that removed the debt of our sin. But there is more. Jesus took our sins, but that same act freed us from the effect of others’ sins upon our hearts and lives.
Let that soak into the wounded places for a moment.

That really opened a new place for me today and I plan to go home and share it with my family.
I wonderful new perspective to a deeper level of healing. I plan to share it with my husband, who this past Good Friday got a visual perspective on Jesus washing away our sins. How great to be able to share with him erasing the sins of others on our lives!

    Thanks! Lina

  12. I am soooo frustrated. My life is getting in the way of my bible study. I am 2 weeks behind! Aggghhh! I read the first chapter but haven’t done anything since. My life has made some turns and I know that Christ is with me but I am feeling pretty alone right now.

  13. Edwina Cowgill says:

God has done such a wonderful work of healing in you that I was stunned to read in Suzie’s post that you were the Melissa she was writing about. Praise God for his healing power in your life!

  14. I am also a childhood and adult sexual abuse “victor” and have always said “victim” – until now!! I love that you put it into this perspective. God speaks through you!

  15. So glad that you are planning to write more on your blog Melissa! I check it everyday to see if you write anything so I was so excited to check today and see posts from yesterday and today!! WOOHOO!!
